Description

Soda ash, calcined in anhydrous state, is a colorless crystalline powder, is produced by means of an ammonia-soda process (Solve's method), and also during complex processing of nephelines.
A hygroscopic product that absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide in the air with the formation of an acidic NaHCO3 salt, it is caked when stored outdoors. The aqueous solutions of sodium carbonate have a strongly alkaline reaction. Sodium carbonate is a technical carbon (sodium carbonate) of grade A (granular) and grade B (powdery).
Soda is the general name of technical sodium salts of carbonic acid. Sodium carbonate (soda ash, sodium carbonate) is a chemical compound Na2CO3, a sodium salt of carbonic acid.

Receiving

Currently, the industrial method of obtaining soda ash is the so-called Solve method. Equilibrium amounts of gaseous ammonia and carbon dioxide are passed into a saturated solution of sodium chloride. The precipitated residue of slightly soluble sodium hydrogencarbonate is filtered off and calcined (dehydrated) by heating to 140-160 ° C, and it passes into sodium carbonate. The formed carbon dioxide and ammonia separated from the mother liquor in the first stage of the process are returned to the production cycle by reaction.
Today, the largest reserves of sodium carbonate are located in the US, Canada, Kenya and South Africa. The main lakes where soda ash is mined are Nathron and Searles, located in Tanzania and California. Also soda lakes can be found on the territory of Transbaikalia and Western Siberia.

 

Application

The sodium salt of carbonic acid is applicable:

- in the production of glass of all kinds, including crystal, optical, medical, electrovacuum glass; glass blocks, foamed glass, soluble sodium silicate, ceramic tiles, frit components for glazes;
- in ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy: for degreasing metals and desulphurization and dephosphatization of pig iron, in cleaning off gases, for neutralizing media;
- in the chemical industry for the production of phosphoric, chromium, barium, sodium salts as carbonate-containing raw materials, in the production of glycerines, allyl alcohol;
- in the pulp and paper industry;
- in the aniline-paint and varnish-and-paint industry;
- in the petrochemical and oil refining industry;
- in soap making and the production of washing and cleaning powders, enamels, for obtaining ultramarine;
- to soften the water of steam boilers and in general eliminate water hardness;
- in the food industry is registered as a food additive E500, acidity regulator, disintegrator, preventing caking.

 

Safety requirements

Technical soda ash refers to substances of the 3rd hazard class.
Aerosol technical soda ash when it comes to the damp skin and mucous membranes of the eyes and nose can cause irritation, and with prolonged exposure to it - dermatitis.
The maximum permissible concentration, aerosols of soda ash in the air of the working area of ​​industrial premises - 2 mg / m3 ..
The production facilities and laboratories in which the technical soda ash are to be used must be equipped with a supply and exhaust ventilation system that ensures the air condition of the working area.
Working with technical soda ash should be provided with special clothing, special footwear and personal protective equipment. When working with technical soda ash, it is necessary to observe safety rules at workplaces approved in the established order.
