Plasticizers. General information

Plasticizers are substances that are introduced into the composition of polymer materials to impart (or enhance) elasticity and (or) plasticity during processing and operation. The plasticizers facilitate dispersion of the ingredients, lower the processing temperature of the compositions, improve the frost resistance of polymers, but sometimes impair their heat resistance. Some plasticizers can increase the fire, light and heat resistance of polymers.
General requirements for plasticizers: good compatibility with the polymer, low volatility, no odor, chemical inertness, resistance to extraction from the polymer by liquid media, for example, oils, detergents.
The most common plasticizers are esters, for example dioctyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate, dioctyl adipate, dioctyl sebacate, diisobutyl phthalate, tri (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, phthalic and trimellitic acid esters, orthophosphoric acid esters. Mineral and non-drying vegetable oils, epoxidized soybean oil, chlorinated paraffins, etc. are also used.
The amount of plasticizer in the composition is from 1 ... 2 to 100% (by weight of the polymer).
The main consumer of plasticizers is the plastics industry (about 70% of the total production of plasticizers is spent on the manufacture of plastic). Plasticizers are widely used in the production of nail varnishes.
Plasticizers are also surface-active additives, which are introduced into mortars and concrete mixtures (0.15 ... 0.3% by weight of binder) to facilitate laying in the mold and reducing the water content. This improves most of the characteristics of the solidified mixture, and also reduces cement consumption, reduces energy consumption when vibrating concrete (self-compacting mixtures) or leveling screeds (self-leveling self-leveling floor mixes).
A widely used plasticizer of this type is the sulphite-alcohol bard. Later, super- and hyperplasticizers with smaller dosages, as well as antifreeze, air-entraining and other useful properties were created.


Diisononyl phthalate is a low-viscous homogeneous transparent oily liquid of a slight yellowish hue with a slight but bitter odor. DINP is soluble in most organic solvents. When in contact with the skin, it leaves an oily coating. The main positive characteristics of DINF are: wear resistance of finished products, good dielectric properties, stability of the substance, low toxicity.


Diisononyl phthalate is used in the form of primary (complete replacement of DOP) or secondary (partial replacement of DOP) plasticizer to produce various types of PVC plastic. Compared with DOP (Dioctylphthalate), it has low volatility and better compatibility. DINP greatly reduces smoke emissions during the processing process and significantly improves the stability of the final products. Diisononyl phthalate is used in the manufacture of all types of plastics (shoe, cable plastic, plastisols, linoleum, film), artificial leather, tent materials, PVC products (insulating coatings for cables, floor coverings, toys, films, industrial hoses), as well as plastics , in contact with food. Diisononyl phthalate is low toxic, available in combination with antioxidants.


DINP is used as a softener for soft PVC. Compared with DOP (Dioctylphthalate), it has low volatility and better compatibility. DINP significantly reduces smoke emissions during the treatment procedure and improves the stability of the final products.

• It is used as a plasticizer in vinyl polymers, cellulose esters, rubbers, polystyrene, allowing to obtain rubber products increased hardiness.
• Often acts as a dielectric and hydraulic fluid in transformers or capacitors.
• It is actively used in production, due to reduced volatility. It is used as a primary or secondary plasticizer for the production of a variety of PVC plastic compounds. Suitable for manufacturing all kinds of plastic products, including shoe, plastisols, cable, linoleum and films.
• Plasticizer diisononyl phthalate is used as a hydraulic and dielectric liquid in capacitors.
• It is also necessary to create health and shoe formulations, sealants, artificial leather, tent materials, molded articles and PVC toys, PVC roofing membranes.
• With the help of a plasticizer, diisononyl phthalate produces mastic for anticorrosive protection of automotive bodies characterized by high performance characteristics.
• Due to its low toxicity, it is suitable for the production of absolutely all products that are created according to ISO 9001 standards.

Safety requirements

Plasticizers are low volatile high-boiling liquids, practically insoluble in water, under normal conditions, resistant to hydrolysis and to the effects of oxygen in the air. The flashpoint and ignition temperature, the maximum allowable concentration of plasticizer vapors in the air of the working area of ​​the production premises are given above.

The production premises must be provided with supply and exhaust ventilation. When working with plasticizers, special clothes and personal protective equipment should be used in accordance with GOST 12.4.011-89.

Based on a recent study of the health and environmental risks of diisononyl phthalate and diisodecylphthalate, the European Commission decided that there is no need to further limit the use of these substances.
Prior to this, the use of these substances in the manufacture of toys for young children and childcare facilities was banned in Europe.
And the question was raised to extend restrictions to other areas of application. But recent research does not provide recommendations on limiting the use of DINP and DIDP, putting an end to the issue of their dangers.
